Baby Wellness Exams Q & A
How early on does my baby need to see the dentist?
According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, your baby’s first visit to the dentist should occur after their first tooth comes in or by one year of age. This ensures they are getting the care they need right from the start and also prevents fear of the dentist from developing.
What happens at the first dental visit?
The exam is short and most of it is spent discussing tooth care with the adults accompanying the child. We will look at the teeth, bite, jaw, and gums. Then, we will go over the following topics:
- Fluoride needs
- Proper brushing and flossing
- Infant oral habits such as thumb sucking
- Diet for healthy teeth
- Teeth development
Take time to ask any questions you may have and be sure to come back every six months.
How is a pediatric dentist different from a general dentist?
Pediatric dentists go through additional training and certification that helps them better understand the unique needs of children. The pediatric dentists at Santa Clarita Children’s Dental received an additional two years of training following dental school to better understand the needs of your baby’s teeth and development, along with any special oral needs. Because we strictly work with children, we excel at helping them feel safe and cared for when at our practice.
